It started as a solution to a real problem. In the 1920s, moisture and dust were the two things that killed a wristwatch, usually by working their way in through the winding crown. Hans Wilsdorf's answer was a case that screwed together in three parts, sealing the movement off from the outside world.

The result was the Oyster, patented in 1926. The earliest versions came in 28mm and 32mm sizes with octagonal or cushion-shaped cases, borrowing their look from the Art Deco design language of the period. Even the fluted bezel, now read purely as a design signature, started as a functional detail, giving watchmakers something to grip while screwing the bezel down onto the case.

Rolex tested the case in public the following year, when Mercedes Gleitze wore one across the English Channel. The watch surfaced in working condition after more than ten hours in the water, giving Rolex its proof of concept and its first real marketing moment in one afternoon. A quarter century later, an Oyster Perpetual accompanied the 1953 Everest expedition with Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a second proof point under cold and high altitude instead of water, one that fed directly into the Explorer line released later that year.

The screw-down crown and screw-down caseback that came out of that patent remain the core structural language of every Rolex sold today. Submariners, Sea-Dwellers and GMTs all borrow directly from a case built decades before any of those professional lines existed.

Where "Oyster Perpetual" Comes From

A waterproof case solved one problem and created another. Manual winding meant unscrewing the crown on a regular basis, and each time it happened, the seals protecting the movement took a bit more wear. In 1931, five years after the Oyster patent, Rolex addressed this with a self-winding rotor that used the motion of the wearer's wrist to keep the mainspring wound automatically. Rotor-driven winding wasn't a first for the industry outright, but Rolex's 360-degree rotor design was, and it's the version that became the template every automatic watch brand still builds on. That was the "Perpetual" half of the name.

The earliest version of that rotor only wound the mainspring in one direction, which meant half of the wrist's natural motion went unused. Rolex adjusted the system over the following decades until its automatic movements wound in both directions, a change that made the self-winding mechanism far more efficient and left the basic concept Wilsdorf patented in 1931 largely untouched. That two-way winding is standard across every current Oyster Perpetual caliber, and it's part of why a watch worn even a few hours a day tends to stay fully wound.

By the mid-1940s, the two words merged into a single phrase used across the catalog. The first Oyster Perpetual Datejust arrived in 1945, and the model line that carries the name outright, simply called the Oyster Perpetual, followed in 1950.

Decades as Rolex's No Date Watch

Through the 1950s and 1960s, the Oyster Perpetual settled into a role it would hold for the next several decades: Rolex's simplest current model, sitting next to the date-equipped Datejust without competing with it. References like the 6564 and 6565, built on the caliber 1030, carried this identity through the 1950s at 34mm, the standard men's size of the period.

The reference 1002 followed in the 1960s, running the caliber 1570 and carrying the "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" designation Rolex had introduced across its catalog in 1957. Through the decades that followed, the no-date Oyster Perpetual case went through minor updates in hands, markers and bracelet styles, but it never picked up a complication or a role beyond its original one.

In 2015, Rolex added a 39mm size to the lineup, joining the existing 26mm, 31mm and 34mm options without otherwise changing the model. The bigger shift came in 2020, when Rolex discontinued both the 26mm and the 39mm, replacing them with the 28mm and 41mm sizes that anchor the current five-size range described below.

Five Case Sizes, Two Movements

The current Oyster Perpetual lineup spans five case sizes, 28mm, 31mm, 34mm, 36mm and 41mm. Every size features a smooth bezel, a matching Oyster bracelet, stick hour markers and baton hands finished in Chromalight lume. Two in-house movements power the entire collection, both certified to Rolex's Superlative Chronometer standard, which tests the fully cased watch to an accuracy of -2 to +2 seconds a day.

The 28mm, 31mm and 34mm models run on the caliber 2232, which carries a 55-hour power reserve. The 36mm and 41mm models use the caliber 3230, which extends that reserve to roughly 70 hours. The difference comes down mostly to the larger mainspring barrel the bigger case allows, and it is the reason a 41mm left sitting over a long weekend is more likely to still be running than a 28mm left in the same drawer.

Oystersteel Construction and Material Properties

Every current Oyster Perpetual is made from Oystersteel, Rolex's proprietary designation for 904L stainless steel. Rolex adopted 904L across its steel catalog in the early 2000s, a departure from the 316L steel standard used by most of the watch industry. 904L offers higher corrosion resistance and holds a sharper sheen after polishing, though its hardness requires specialized machinery to shape and finish.

The case, bezel, bracelet and internal screw components of an Oyster Perpetual are cut from the same batch of 904L stock. That practice keeps the color and finish matched between the case lugs and the bracelet links, avoiding the tonal mismatches sometimes visible on watches built from mixed steel grades. 904L also has a lower nickel content than many alloys used elsewhere in the industry, which is part of why it tends to sit comfortably against skin that reacts to cheaper steel blends.

Price Guide and Resale Value

Retail pricing across the lineup scales with case size, not dial color, and the gaps between sizes are smaller than people tend to expect. The 28mm sits at the bottom of the range, the 34mm and 36mm sit in the middle, and the 41mm sits at the top, with only a few hundred dollars separating most steps. That flat structure means buyers can choose a size based on wrist fit instead of budget, and it holds true across dial colors too. Standard black, silver and sunburst blue dials share the exact same retail price as the newer lacquer colors within a given size, so at the counter, the decision comes down entirely to preference.

That parity disappears the moment a watch changes hands on the secondary market. Standard sunburst dials in black, silver and navy tend to trade close to retail, since supply keeps pace with demand for those colors. Lacquer dials behave differently. Limited production windows and discontinued colorways have created distinct pricing tiers that retail parity never accounted for in the first place.

The discontinued 2020 turquoise dial is the clearest example, regularly trading several times above its original retail price depending on size and condition. Buyers comparing pre-owned listings benefit from cross-referencing the six-digit reference number against the dial generation, since certain lacquer references have seen dial swaps that don't match the watch's original configuration.

How to Read Oyster Perpetual Reference Numbers

Every modern Oyster Perpetual carries a six-digit reference number that identifies its case size and generation. The 28mm carries reference 276200, the 31mm carries 277200, the 34mm carries 124200, the 36mm carries 126000, and the 41mm carries 134300, having replaced the outgoing 124300. The digits that follow the prefix denote small variations in configuration, though on the Oyster Perpetual that range is limited since the whole collection is offered in Oystersteel with a smooth bezel.

The 41mm's move from reference 124300 to 134300 is a useful example of how these numbers shift even when the watch itself changes very little on the surface. Rolex kept the caliber 3230 movement unchanged and paired the update with new dial colors, the case and proportions carrying over largely as they were.

On all newer references, Rolex laser-engraves the serial number onto the rehaut, the inner edge of the case between the crystal and the dial, instead of stamping it into the case between the lugs the way older references did. That change means the serial number is now visible with the bracelet still attached.

From Sunburst Simplicity to Lacquer Innovation

Historically, the Oyster Perpetual stuck to silver, black, white and the occasional blue, all finished with a sunburst pattern of fine radial brushing. In 2020, Rolex shifted direction with a set of glossy lacquer dials in turquoise, candy pink, coral red, yellow and green across select sizes. The turquoise dial in particular became one of the most talked-about references to come out of Rolex in years, and discontinued examples now trade well above their original retail price on the secondary market.

In 2025, Rolex extended the program with three matte lacquer dials, beige, lavender and pistachio, released across all five case sizes at once. Unlike the earlier sunburst dials, these lacquer finishes sit flat and consistent across the surface with no radial pattern at all. Not every 2020 color carried the same reach. The original glossy turquoise dial remains limited to the 31mm and 36mm sizes, which has only pushed the resale value of early 41mm turquoise models higher with collectors.

The lacquer process itself is more involved than a standard dial finish. Rolex builds up the color in several thin coats applied directly to the brass dial blank, with each layer cured before the next goes on. That's part of why the matte 2025 colors and the glossy 2020 colors come out looking so distinct. The number of coats and the final surface treatment change the texture entirely, even though the underlying manufacturing steps are shared across both generations.

The Oysterclasp and Integrated Easylink

The Oyster Perpetual bracelet uses the Oysterclasp, a folding mechanism that skips the flip-over safety latch found on Rolex's dive watches. That construction keeps the underside of the bracelet thin and flat against the wrist, suited to a watch that isn't built around dive-rated hardware.

Built into the clasp is the Easylink extension system, which lets the wearer expand or contract the bracelet by roughly 5mm with no tools required. It is a small adjustment for heat or humidity that swells the wrist slightly over the course of a day, and it doesn't offer the multi-notch range of Rolex's Glidelock system used on the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea.

100 Years of the Oyster Patent

Many watch collections carry gaps in their history, periods where a model was discontinued and revived later under a new name or spec. The Oyster case has no such gap. It has been in continuous production since 1926, through the Perpetual rotor added in 1931, the Datejust that borrowed it in 1945, and every size and dial update added since. Few watch designs anywhere can claim a century of uninterrupted production under the same founding patent.

That continuity is easy to overlook when the conversation is focused on which dial color is available this season. It is the reason the Oyster Perpetual still reads to a watchmaker in 2026 the same way it read to Mercedes Gleitze in 1927, five case sizes and a rotating list of colors later.
